Day 2 of my venture was the foyer. The big project here (the room is pretty empty to begin with, and minor clutter just needed to be moved out) was the shelving unit that’s been leaning on the wall in pieces for months:

So ugly! Now, this is not your standard IKEA furniture here. Handmade by my grandfather, disassembled by my forgetful dad, there were no instructions to be had. And it had to be assembled in a certain order, as some things screwed in and some fit into slots, and would have to be taken apart again if a piece didn’t fit. The only option was to lay it all out on the floor and figure it out.

After several hours mucking about and manually screwing things in until the drill battery charged, we were in business! But it was super heavy and we weren’t sure if it would fall apart if we tried to lift it, so we had to wait for Joe to get home for backup. Here he is being sexy handy and mounting it to the wall for us after we lifted it (with mama looking on).

Now, the reason why this was so important - packed away in our giant “Harry Potter Closet” have been about six boxes of books, completely inaccessible and cluttered and awful. Since I repurposed my shelves when we moved, I didn’t have space for them in my room, and they have been sitting around waiting for me to set this thing up. Now, since we have those nifty shelf tracks, I can make the shelves any size I want to. Which meant I had to bring all my books out and figure out where they’d all go, so I could see what size they had to be.

Finally and painstakingly, the final product!!!

Completely organized and put away, and with room for growth! I’ve also decided that this unit will be my book-limit. If a new book doesn’t fit on these shelves, I need to get rid of an older book (or download it for my Nook) to make room for it.

There is a desk attachment (where those two awkward-looking random pieces of wood are in the center) but it was too late to get that done tonight. It will be done tomorrow though, and no more pieces of this brute will fuck my habitat any longer!
